#1 DON’T SKIP THE PREP
Proper prep before a kitchen cabinet project makes for far better results. Take the time up front and you will be thankful you did.
- Take a before photo! Before you get too far ahead of yourself, take a picture of the old kitchen cabinets, to pair with the “after” photo when you’re all done. When you’re ready to brag, tag us in the before and after photos on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. We’re @paintshopcanada, and we’d love to see!)
- Remove doors, drawers and hardware. Removing hinges and pulls gives you the flattest surface to paint and prevents you from getting any paint on the hardware itself, if you plan to reuse it.
- Find a workspace to paint your cupboard doors. You’ll need to leave them in your workspace for extended periods to dry.
- Clean all surfaces. Wipe doors down with a slightly damp cloth. TSP will also help remove the age-old grease and grime. (Just be sure to wipe the surface clean of the TSP too.)
- Sand lightly. Use a medium grit sandpaper (100- to 150-grit) to roughen up the surface. This will give the surface extra “teeth” to grab hold of the paint as it’s being applied.
- Clean surfaces again, wiping away any new dust with a slightly damp cloth.
- Tape any adjacent surfaces with painter’s tape or cover with a drop cloth any areas to be protected.
#2 PRIME & RE-PREP
- Prime. Give yourself a clean slate. Stix Primer will turn any new or unknown surface into a blank canvas, which is especially handy in new-to-you-homes where previous coatings aren’t known. Wait 24 hours, until dry.
- Lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out drips or pools and give the surface extra grip for the Advance to bond.
#3 ADD FIRST & FINISH COATS
- Apply the first coat. Cut in on uneven surfaces and corners with an angled brush. On flat surfaces, use a foam or microfiber roller. Let the paint dry completely.
- Sand again. Once the paint is fully dry, sand with 220-grit sandpaper, again to encourage adhesion. Then, wipe away any new dust with a slightly damp cloth.
- Apply second coat. Let the paint dry for 24 hours.
#4 TREAT YOURSELF
- This process may take a couple of days, so when everything is back in place, reward yourself. See how your new kitchen handles a late brunch maybe, after you’ve slept in.
